Over 50 families from Highland, Swegle and other NE Salem elementary schools took part in our Summer Family Literacy Program in 2011. Parents and their children from pre-kinder-2nd grade learned about literacy strategies and the importance of practicing reading and writing at home to stay on grade level and keep learning.
The families received materials to support what they were learning in the program. While the parents met with master teachers the kids read culturally relevant stories, sang songs, and participated in a variety of art projects. The program included book giveaways, a field trip to the Salem Public Library, and party at the A.C. Gilbert Discovery Village. Many of the same families are participating in our new Family Literacy Program.
